Year 4 English Home Learning 22.02.2021-26.02.2021

Good morning Year 4 and welcome to a new term and another weeks home learning. I hope you have all had a good holiday and have made lots of memories with your family.

Independent Reading.

Please continue to ensure you are reading at least three times a week. If you are in need of a new reading book, please send me an email and I can arrange for you to drop off your old book and pick up a new one from the office. You can also log on to Oxford Owl. These have a large selection of, free to download, banded e-books which can be accessed on a tablet, smartphone and computer. Remember, once you have finished a book to complete a book review and email it to me to read.

Monday 22nd February:

From now, three of our English lessons will include a warm up session. These will all be linked to sentence structure and may include up levelling sentences or recreating you own sentence following a set structure.

Spelling - Our spelling focus for this week will be the suffix sion. Although it is spelt sion, it actually sounds like shun.

Remember: Looks like - sion but sounds like shun.

When we add sion onto a root word, it changes it from a noun to verb. The root word will usually end in de or se. We then take away the de or se and add sion in its place. An example of this would be divide - division.

Today I would like you to add the suffix sion onto these root words remembering the rule that you need to follow.

You can record them as: divide + sion = division

confuse invade decide explode include revise corrode persuade

Warm up - Look at the following sentences. Can you use a subordinate conjunction to extend them and add further information. I have included a link to remind you about subordinate conjunctions.

The children went to the shop. I ate an ice-cream. The house was cold inside. My heart was pounding.

Can I retrieve information from a non-fiction text?

Our reading focus for this week will be retrieval, however we will be focusing on a new text type, explanations. An explanation text explains the process of how or why something happens which makes it a non-fiction text. Like many non-fiction texts, it has certain features which need to be included. Your retrieval questions for today will be based on identifying some of these features. I have included copies of each text and also record a video of each being read.

How do frogs grow? Why do people use the internet? Why does the moon change shape?

Here are your questions:

1) Can you write down 1 sub-heading from each of the three texts?

2) How many paragraphs are in the text Why do people use the internet?

3) Can you pick out three words from each text that are specific for that topic e.g. Earth - Why does the moon change shape.

4) In the text ‘Why does the moon change shape’ there is a diagram with a caption. What does the caption tell us?

5) Which of the three texts has an introductory paragraph? There is more than one.

6) In the text ‘Why do people use the internet’ there is a concluding paragraph. What does it tell us?

Tuesday 23rd February:

Spelling - Today we will be continuing learning about the suffix sion. Yesterday we learnt that we add sion onto a root word and it changes it from a verb to a noun.

Your activity today requires you to use a dictionary. I have taken the words from yesterday’s sessions and added the definition. However, I have mixed them so the definition is not with the correct word. I would like you to use a dictionary and match the correct word and definition. I have done the first one for you.

Sion definition jumble.

Warm up:

Can you up level these sentences by adding some interesting adjectives or adverbs. You may be able to turn them into expanded noun phrases.

The bird flew through the air. I saw a tree outside my window. The snow was falling onto the ground.

Can I retrieve information from a non-fiction text?

Today we will be focusing on the information that is contained within an explanation text. As this type of text tells us how or why something happens, our retrieval questions will also have that focus. We will be using the same texts as yesterday in order for you to become familiar with the structure and purpose of them. As you are reading the questions, look at what the question words are that begin each one. What do you notice about them? I will also not tell you which text to refer to, however, there will be clues within the questions.

1) How long does it take for an egg to develop into a tadpole?

2) How long does it take for the Earth to travel around the sun?

3) Why is the moon not always visible on Earth?

4) Give two reasons why people use the internet?

5) How does a tadpole change?

6) How many year have people been using the internet for?

Wednesday 24th February:

Spelling - For our spelling session today, we are not only going to be continuing our work on the sion suffix but also reviewing other suffixes and prefixes we have learnt so far this term. I have attached a document that has 4 columns - ly ation anti sion. I would like you to sort these words into the correct columns. When writing the word into the columns, please make sure you are writing it with the suffix or prefix added and following the rules we have learnt.

invite slow bacterial persuade angry septic confuse prepare social decide grumpy vibrate include clockwise divide

Word sort.

Grammar - Can I use the present perfect form of verbs?

The present perfect tense is used to describe events that started in the past but are still true now or that have an effect on what is happening now. When writing sentences in the present perfect tense we use the verb have or has. Watch the following video to learn more about when, why and how we use the present perfect form of verbs.

Sporting stars - present perfect tense.

Now i would like you to complete the following activities.

Can you change these sentences into the present perfect tense? Refer back to the video for support.

He walked along the road. I played football with my friends.

They decided to bake a cake. The boy grew hungry. The children danced around the hall.

Can you write your own past tense sentences (at least four) and change them into the present perfect tense?

Thursday 25th February:

Spelling - Today you will be applying the suffix sion into your writing. As the previous week, I have recorded a series of sentences that contain at least one word with the suffix sion. I would like you to listen carefully to the sentences and write them down. Remember your sentences need to be punctuated correctly as well trying to ensure those spelling patterns you have learnt are correct. I will say the sentence once but you can stop the video and go back if you need to hear it again. Once you have completed this you can watch the second video which will go through the spelling of each word.

Warm up - Can you change these sentences so that they include a fronted adverbial?

I walked to the park after I had eaten my lunch.

The children were skipping on their way to the park.

Can I plan what I am going to write about?

Today, you are going to plan your own explanation text about how shadows are made. I have included a short video and powerpoint to discuss what is needed to be included in an explanation.

You will have learnt about shadows in your science lessons and you can refer back to this to help you when writing and planning your explanation text. Remember, we write a plan to help us know what we want to write about and it also helps us to structure our writing.

Here is a template for your plan and an example of one of our reading texts in a plan, to show how it is structured. I have included space for an introductory and concluding sentence and three paragraphs, however, you can include more if you wish.

I have also included a document about shadows and a video which may help with your planning.

Friday 26th February:

Spelling - Our spelling focus for today will be our Year 3 and 4 statutory words. The five words for this week are:

recent various reign business certain

I would like you to use a dictionary to find the meaning of each of these words and then include them in your own sentence.

Can I write an explanation text?

Today I would like you to use the plan you created yesterday to write your own explanation text about shadows are made. Use your plan to support you and refer back to the video to remind yourself what needs to be included.

This about using the grammatical features we have learnt too. Can you include some fronted adverbials, conjunctions or maybe some different types of punctuation. Remember to send me a photo of them when they are complete. I look forward to reading them soon.
