Year 4 Topic Home Learning- 08.03.2021

This weeks Zoom meeting will take place on Wednesday at 11am. We will have time to discuss any questions you may have.

Here are this weeks topic lessons. Although this is not the week that we had all planned, we will be back in class together soon.

Monday - Geography

Last week we learnt about grid references. Please watch the video below to remind you what grid references are and how to locate them.

Before Christmas we learnt about the Mayans.

Today I would like you to locate the Mayan temples on a map using the grid

references.

Here is the Mayan map.

Try to locate all of the Mayan Temples.

Tuesday - RE and PE

RE- Today, we are going to focus on religion as a whole. There is a document below which discusses the main six religions that we learn about. I would like you to read the text. Once you have read the text, I would like you to see if you can retrieve the answers to the questions from the text. The reading skill which we are practicing is retrieval.

Religion text and questions.

PE- Here are this weeks PE challenges.

1. Go on a walk with a member of your household. When on your walk, I would like you to consider which direction you are walking in. Use a compass to help ( a compass can be easily downloaded on the app store).

2. Play catch if possible.

3. Have a go at the sock ladder challenge.

Wednesday- Science

I would like you to undertake an investigation at home today.

The research question we are going to investigate is ‘ Does the appearance of food affect how it tastes?”

Think about your answers for these questions:

Where do fruit and vegetables come from?

Have you ever been to a farm? What did you see?

What are your favourite fruits and vegetables? Can these be grown in the UK?

I would like you to find a piece of food that you enjoy, and look for what you consider a ‘normal’ shaped piece of food, and then look for two different shapes of the same food. If possible, it would be great to see what you investigate so feel free to send photos of your choice to me.

You need to label each piece of food A,B, and C. Then your eyes need to be covered and you must eat one of the pieces of food. I would like you to rank them in order of tastiest to least tasty.

Compare your results: did the appearance of the food affect how they tasted? Were you able to work out which pieces of food were irregularly shaped just by tasting them? Have your views about irregularly shaped food changed?

Thursday- Science

Design your own Robo-Bug.

Insects are adapted just like humans to live. Insects adapt so they can increase their chances of survival.

Today, you are going to make your own Robo-Bug. Your Robo-Bug can be whatever you like. I have attached pictures of bugs, and a table of insects and their abilities. These abilities are specific to the insect and allow them to complete their day-to-day routine.

I would like your Robo-Bug to have a positive effect on the world.

First of all I would like you to think of a way the world could be improved or helped.

Then, consider how your Robo-Bug could help the world.

My example- I believe that the World has a problem with plastic waste. I know this because I have seen plastic waste that has been washed up by the sea on to the sands and the beaches of the UK. Therefore, I am going to create a Robo-Bug that will collect plastic off the beaches.

My Robo-Bug will therefore need to carry heavy objects and walk over un-even land. My Robo-Bug will have eight legs to help it walk on un-even land and will have a hard shell on its back, like a beetle meaning it could carry heavy objects.

My Robo-Bug would collect the plastic and allow it to be recycled which would have a positive effect on the world.

Your task:

Write a paragraph explaining what your Robo-Bug is, and how it is adapted to help have a positive effect on the world.

Draw your Robo-Bug in detail.

Friday- Science

Innovating the future.

Today, I would like you to create your invention.

Please watch this video.

I would like you to create a poster. This poster needs to be of your new invention.

Your invention can be whatever you choose. It may change the World, it may just help on a day-to-day basis such as a new way to peel a potato.

What invention could you make? How would it help you and the World?

I would like you to use this sentence starter and explain your new invention.

My invention is ……………………., I have decided to invent this because………..

Remember this invention needs to be amazing, therefore I expect your reasons behind why you have made the invention to be good. Explain why this invention is needed, who it will benefit and how it is going to be made.

I would then like you to draw your invention, add labels explaining what each part is and how it works.

I am hoping to share these posters that you create with others, so good luck. Get inventing!

I am expecting to see some crazy, and spectacular inventions. I cannot wait to see what you decide you would like to invent.
