Year 2 English Home Learning - 01.02.2021 - 05.02.2021

Hello Year 2,

It was so lovely to see some of you on zoom last week. I especially loved all of the work you shared with me, you should all be so proud of yourselves. I have been really enjoying receiving pictures of all of your hard work on my email, keep sending them in.

Below is your English learning for this week. Have a go at each lesson and remember to send photos of your work to me using my email address on the class page. I will be expecting at least one email from you per week so that I can see your amazing work.

This week, we will continue with our learning through the story ‘Vlad and the Great Fire of London’. We will be imagining what this period of time was like for Boxton the rat, creating thoughts and feeling bubbles using our inference skills. Later in the week, we will use all we have learned to write a diary entry (just like Samuel Pepys).

Please remember that any worksheets do not need to be printed, they are there to support and guide you and you can have a go at these activities on a piece of paper at home.

Monday

Phonics

1. This week’s common words are:

that’s I’ve let’s there’s he’s we’re couldn’t

Practice reading these and spelling them.

2. When we are talking we sometimes shorten words such as instead of saying I am we often say I’m. The apostrophe marks where letters are missing. This is called using an apostrophe for contraction.

Click on the link and watch the video about using apostrophes for contraction.

3. Have a look in a book at home and see how many contracted words you can find. Write a list of all of the ones you find.

Reading

Time for ten minutes of reading. Today I would like you to read a book at your colour band. Here is the link for the Oxford Owl website - click here. Remember it is free to register and login to use the books online. After reading your book, write three things about the story or the information that you have read.

English

Today, we are going to create some thought bubbles and feeling hearts for Boxton the rat at different points of the story. Look at these pictures taken from the story. What is happening in each picture? What might Boxton be thinking? How might he be feeling?

Let’s do the first one together. What is Boxton doing in the picture? He is nibbling on some breadcrumbs on the warm floor of the bakery. What might he be thinking? How might he be feeling? We are going to record our thought ideas in bubbles and feeling ideas in hearts like this:

Now you try the same using two different pictures. Remember to send a picture of your work!

Tuesday

Phonics

1. Practice reading and spelling this week’s common words. Make sure you put the apostrophe in the correct places.

that’s I’ve let’s there’s he’s we’re couldn’t

2. Have a look at the sentences below. Use apostrophes to make contractions out of the words that are in bold. Re-write the sentences with these words in their contracted forms.

I cannot got to the park.
He is sad.
They are too small.
We are lucky.
There is a new teacher in school.
I have got a new toy.

Watch the video below to check your answers.

Make sure you use the apostrophe to show where the letters have been removed.

3. Have a go at this missing letter game.

Reading

For today’s reading, I would like you to re-read ‘Vlad and the Great Fire of London’. You may choose to read independently or with a grown-up at home, or you can watch the videos again. We need to know this text really well.

English

Today, we are going to use our thoughts and feelings from yesterday to write some sentences. We are going to write in first person, imagining we are Boxton the rat. I am going to read through my thought bubbles and feeling hearts to help.

Now, I am going to write some full sentences using capital letters and full-stops using my work from yesterday to help. I am going to say my sentence three times before I start to write. Here are some of my sentences.

These breadcrumbs are delicious and just what I needed.

It is so warm and cosy in the bakery.

I feel so relaxed and full after eating those tasty breadcrumbs.

Here are some examples of simple sentences.

I ate the breadcrumbs.

It is warm in here.

I feel full.

Wednesday

Phonics

that’s I’ve let’s there’s he’s we’re couldn’t

2. Look at this week’s common words - write what they were before they were contracted.
e.g. - I’m -> I am

Watch the video below to check your answers.

3. Use these words to write 4 lots of sentences. Write each one twice - once with the words in their contracted form and once without the contraction.
e.g. I’m called Miss Hughes. I am called Miss Hughes.

Reading

For today’s reading, choose one of the texts below and try reading independently using your phonics knowledge to help. Tomorrow you will answer questions on your text.

Text 1 - I can

Text 2 - On the River

Text 3 - Pete’s Silver

Text 4 - Doctor’s Orders

English

Over the next couple of days, we are going to write a diary entry, imagining we are Boxton the rat, living through the Great Fire of London. We are going to use our learning from the past couple of weeks to help us do this. You will need your story map from last week to help you plan your writing. We are going to begin our diary entry at the point where Boston and Vlad enter the bakery on Pudding Lane. What happens when they first arrive at the bakery. Listen to the story again if you need to.

Use a template similar to the one below to help you plan your writing. Remember you only need to make notes, recording key words and information. You do not need to write full sentences. Try to include some thoughts and feelings in each box. Use the pictures to help.

Text 4 - Doctor’s Orders

English

Today, we are going to start to write our diary entry as Boxton the rat. Begin by reading through or talking through your plan from yesterday.

Here are some examples of the beginning of a diary entry written by Vlad the Flea. Have a read of these and then have a go at writing the beginning of your own diary entry as Boxton.

Dear diary,

The day began as usual with Boxton and I searching for something tasty to eat. Eventually, Boxton’s nose led us to the little bakery on Pudding Lane. The warm floor was sprinkled with delicious breadcrumbs. We feasted for a short time before falling asleep in front of the burning oven. All of a sudden, I woke to see smoke circling the room and flames climbing the walls. I spotted a hole in the door. Boxton ran as fast as he could as I clung to the fur between his ears. My heart was pounding.

Dear diary,

What a day I have had! It all started in the bakery. Boxton and I were eating some tasty breadcrumbs. Then we fell asleep on the warm floor. Suddenly, I woke up to find the room full of thick smoke. There were bright red flames in every corner. We ran through a hole in the wooden door. Outside, the streets were full of people running from the fire.

Dear diary,

This morning I went to the bakery. Boxton ate lots of breadcrumbs. After eating, we fell asleep. I woke up and there were flames filling the room. We ran out onto the street.

Rehearse your sentence by saying out loud before you begin to write it, this will help you to structure your sentence and remember it as you write. If you have access to a recording device (tablet, phone) you may choose to say your sentence, recording it so that you can play it back as much as you need to whilst writing. Use the pictures and your planning from yesterday to help you sequence the events. Remember you are Boxton the rat so you will be using the word ‘I’ in your sentences.

Spend between 10 to 30 minutes writing. We are going to continue with this in tomorrow’s lesson.

Friday

Phonics

1. Practice reading and spelling this week’s common words

that’s I’ve let’s there’s he’s we’re couldn’t

2. I would like you to write a list of all of the contractions you can think of, if you can’t think of many maybe you could have a sneaky look back at some of the work you have completed this week to help you. Can you think of any that we haven’t looked at this week?

3. Use words that you have not used yet this week to write 4 lots of sentences. Write each one twice - once with the words in their contracted form and once without the contraction.
e.g. I’m called Miss Hughes. I am called Miss Hughes.

Reading

For today’s ten minutes of reading, you can choose a book of your choice to share with a member of your family. Alternatively, choose a story to listen to from the Cbeebies bedtime stories collection. Click here.

English

Let’s begin by reading through our writing from yesterday. Check it makes sense as you read. You can make any changes as you go through, perhaps with a different coloured pen or pencil if you have one.

Now we are going to continue with our diary entry. We are going to write about running through the cobbled streets amongst all of the people escaping the fire. We are going to include how we are feeling and some thoughts too. You can use your sentences from earlier in the week to help.

Spend 10 to 30 minutes adding to your diary entry. Please send your a picture of your work to Mrs Claxton or Miss Hughes using the email address. We would love to see your writing and provide some feedback.

Remember that trying your best is all that matters. The more we write, the better our writing will become, it is okay to make mistakes, we learn from them! Always read back through your work and find something good that you can feel proud of.
