Hello Year 2,
I hope you have all had a lovely half term and have enjoyed time with your families. It was so lovely to see so many of you on zoom before half term and I look forward to seeing you all on our next one which is this Tuesday (23rd February) at 1.15pm.
Our English blog includes a phonics sessions (about 15-20 minutes long), ten minutes of reading and our English lesson (approximately 30-45 minutes long). You may choose to break the sessions up into parts rather than try and complete in one sitting. For example, you may choose to complete the ten-minute reading session at the end of the day. Deliver in a way that works for you at home. Remember the children will need brain breaks or movement between sessions to help them focus. Please just email me if you have any questions or would like some further support.
In English this week, we will be reading a story called ‘The Messy Magpie’. We will be exploring the key themes in the story and making links to our learning in science from last half-term. We will be learning to recall an instruction text about caring for our beaches, using maps and actions, and becoming familiar with instructional language. Next week, we will be writing our own instruction text about caring for our environment. We will then put all of our texts together to make a class book for other children to read.
Please remember that any worksheets do not need to be printed, they are there to support and guide you and you can have a go at these activities on a piece of paper at home.

3. I have written a short paragraph below, I wasn’t sure about the rules for changing words from singular to plural so I have made some mistakes. Can you help me by correcting my mistakes?
The mouses crawled on the floor with their four foots. One of them wanted to visit the volcanos but all the buss going there were broken down. Instead, he decided to take a road trip to three different citys, where many persons lived. While visiting, he made wishs every time he saw a shooting star. He wished for new blanketes for his family. Finally it was time to go back home. On the way back he talked to some friendly butterflyes and a pack of foxs.

We use this when we are writing about someone else. Change the I in these phrases to he/she.

Reading
Read one of the texts below. Choose a text that you can mostly read independently. How many words can you read in 60 seconds? Read aloud three times. What are the key themes of the text? In the same way as we did yesterday, see if you can identify some themes from the text.

Starter: Today, we are going to write some dictated sentences. Click on the video below:
In our lesson, we are going to think about one of the key themes in this week’s story ‘The Messy Magpie’.
In the story, lots of rubbish is dropped or left behind by people. You are going to think about the message that you would like to give to the people who do this. Do you agree with leaving rubbish behind? What reasons for not dropping litter could you give to them to persuade them not to do it?
We are going to use role-play to rehearse our messages about dropping litter and leaving rubbish in our environment. Practice saying your message to a member of your family imagining that they are just about to drop some litter. Try to include a reason for not dropping it. Remember to talk in full sentences and to use a clear voice.
Try these sentences to help you get started.
Please think before you drop that litter. You are making our area look messy.
Do not drop that litter, please take it to a bin. It is spoiling our environment for animals.
Stop, do not drop! Rubbish needs to go in a bin. If you can not find one, then take your rubbish back home.
Keep rehearsing your sentences so that you can remember them. If you have a recording device such as a tablet or phone, you could record your voice so that you have your sentences ready for tomorrow’s lesson.
This afternoon will be our zoom meeting. It will take place at 1.15pm. We will be recapping on some work on shape as well as playing times tables bingo. You will need to create a bingo grid with 6 multiples of 10 on it (numbers that are in the 10 times table from 0x10 to 12x10). I have completed one below to help you with this. I would also like you to have a piece of work to show, like we usually do. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Today, we are going to write our messages, rehearsed yesterday, in speech bubbles. We are going to write in full sentences.
If you recorded your messages yesterday then spend a few minutes listening to them and saying them again out loud. Do not worry if you were unable to record your messages, you can practice saying your sentences before you begin to write. Try saying your sentence using noisy punctuation just like we do in the classroom. This helps us to remember what we are going to write. Repeat two more times and then write your sentence.

Today, we are going to listen an instruction text about looking after our beaches. This links back to our science lesson when we were learning about beach habitats. We shared ideas and identified rules for taking care of the beach and protecting organisms living there. Can you remember some of the important rules we shared?
Click on the video here to listen to the text. A written version of the text is below. At this stage, the children need to focus on listening to the text rather than reading it.
How to take care of our beaches
Have you ever visited a beautiful beach? If so, you will know how wonderful it is to spend time there. Unfortunately, people have been leaving rubbish and unwanted things behind. This looks terrible and it is harming the natural home of many living things.
We must all take care of our beaches and protect the natural world. Please follow these instructions when you next visit a beach.
1) First, find a space on the beach to relax or play. Make sure you do not sit on any minibeasts!
2) Then, take your time to enjoy the beach. You could build a sandcastle, do some digging or go for a paddle in the sea.
3) Look for interesting shells but remember to leave them behind when you leave.
4) Take photographs of living things such as crabs or flowers. Do not touch them and do not take them home.
5) Finally, when you leave, collect your belongings and take them away with you. Make sure you do not leave any rubbish behind.
Now that we have listened to our instruction text, we are going to create a text map using pictures and some words, just like we do when we create a story map. Here is mine to help you.
In tomorrow’s lesson, we are going to use our text map to help us learn the text.

Today, we are going to have ten minutes of reading for pleasure time. Choose your favourite book and share with a member of your family. What is it that you enjoy so much about this book? Are there any other books with a similar theme that you would like to read. Make a wish-list of books you would like to read.

We are going to spend today’s lesson learning to recall the instruction text ‘How to take care of our beaches’. First, listen to the text from yesterday. Now take out your text map and use to help you join in with the video. When you feel ready, try retelling the text using your map and actions without the video. You might choose to add or change part of your text map to help you to do this. You are going to learn the text so that you can perform it to your family.
