Year 4 home learning - Monday 11th October 2021

Hello Year 4, I hope you are all well and keeping yourselves cosy and warm at home!

It is a shame that we have had to come back to home learning for a little while but it’s definitely better to be safe than sorry!

I have included some work for you to complete at home this week:

Tuesday

What do you notice about the words? What could this weeks spelling focus be?

irresponsible

unkind

unbelievable

English:

We have been focusing on vocabulary this week in our reading lessons.

This means that we have been finding new words and phrases that interest us and using different strategies to try to work out the meaning of the new words that we encounter.

We sometimes use a dictionary to find the meaning of new words, we sometimes read around the word and use the context of the sentence to help us and sometimes we replace the word with one that we already know to see if it makes sense within the sentence.

I wonder if you can identify any new words of interest in this passage of the Ice Palace Story?

Your task today is to:

  1. Read the extract from the Ice Palace below.

  2. Identify any new words or phrases that interest you.

  3. Then use one of our three strategies to find the meaning of the new words.

  4. Record the meaning of the words that you have identified.

Maths:

We have been working on addition and subtraction in our maths lessons, so we will be continuing to practice our column addition and subtraction methods this week. Please follow the link below to the Oak National Academy to complete your maths lesson.

PSHE:

In our PSHE lessons we have been learning about our physical, emotional and mental health. Today I would like you to think about setting some personal goals to improve your physical, emotional and mental health. Remember a goal is something that you are trying to do or to achieve.

For example:

I could set an emotional goal to stop loosing my temper so easily.

or

I could set a physical goal to include more fruit and vegetables in my diet.

or

I could set a mental health goal to make sure I am getting a good nights sleep every night.

Task: Use the template below (or draw your own goal) to set three goals for each type of health - physical, emotional and mental. Record you goals around the goal picture.

Wednesday

Spelling:

Let’s play who am I?

Each of the statements below match to one of our key words for this week. I wonder if you can figure out which ones?

  1. I can’t be seen.

  2. I cant be done.

  3. I am spelt incorrectly.

  4. I mean cruel.

  5. I am not doing what I should.

  6. I am against the law.

  7. I act in a silly way.

English:

Can you find all the nouns, pronouns and prepositions in the following passage:

The cat shot under the fence to catch the mouse but it quickly scuttled inside a hole in a tree trunk. Fluffy waited by the hole poking her paws in it every couple of minutes.

Draw a story map of everything that has happened so far in The Ice Palace story.

Think about all the exciting action scenes that we have already read about:

eg/

Ivan getting lost in the forest and then being chased by wolves - thankfully he was saved by the bear who chased off all the wolves!

Ivan wandering through the snow and all of a sudden a huge crack opened up beneath his feet which turned into a gigantic chasm! Luckily, he managed to grab hold of a tree root to save him from the avalanche of snow that came tumbling down on top of him!

Ivan getting lost in a fierce snow storm and being saved by the snowy owl, circling around his head and asking him to follow it. Finally the owl lead him to safety. Pheww!

Can you write a short and exciting action scene of your own to go into the Ice Palace story?

What might Ivan face now? Its up to you!

Remember:

-your action scene needs to include a build up, a problem and a resolution

-you could include powerful verbs and adverbs (which we learnt about last week) to describe the action in detail

Spelling :

This week we have been focusing on adding the prefixes dis, mis, in, im, il, ir and un.

When we add a prefix, just add it! Don’t worry if it doubles some of the letters.

For example/ un + necessary = unnecessary

Don’t be tempted to leave out an ‘n’

Can you spot all of the words that have double letters as a result of adding these prefixes and write them down?

  1. un +

    necessary, intentional, named, natural, nerve

  2. im +

    possible, mature, modest, movable, measurable

  3. dis +

satisfy, similar, obey, service, trust, appear

  4. ir +

    regular, responsible, resistible, recognisable

English:

Today in our English lesson we will be exploring simple and compound sentences and comparing them with complex sentences. Please follow the three links below to the Oak National Academy to complete today’s English lesson.

Friday:

Spelling :

Today we will be looking at some of our statutory words that we have learnt over the last few weeks. I would like you to include these words in silly sentences. The sillier the better! I know you are all very good at being silly :) The words I would like you to use are:

complete, consider, continue, decide, describe, different, difficult, disappear, early, earth

English:

Can you rearrange these sentences so that they make sense. I have included the punctuation in the first mixed up sentence to help you.

under cat The tree. the sat puppy underneath a the slept table frozen entered the snow the queen palace

Can I proof read and edit my work?

Today, I would like you to read through your action scene from Wednesday and edit it using a different coloured pen or pencil. When we edit something, we look to correct any mistakes we may have made, including spelling and punctuation, and try to improve it by changing some of the language or sentence types you have used. Once you have edited your original, I would like you to write the final copy up in your neatest handwriting.

Maths:

We will be continuing to practice the different strategies that we have learnt for subtraction today. Please follow the link below to the Oak National Academy to complete your maths lesson.
