Vision
At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, we equip our children with the art and design skills required for their transition into Key Stage Three. We aim to ensure that all children leave us as determined, confident and aspirational artists. Our Art and Design curriculum stimulates creativity and imagination through visual, tactile and sensory experiences. We encourage our children to explore, build on and record their own creative and imaginative ideas, building confidence and enjoyment. Our children will develop curiosity, by exploring the work of a range of inspirational artists. They will become accustomed to looking at their own work and that of others critically and empathetically to improve and develop as an artist. Our carefully designed Art and Design curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils, regardless of their background or starting point show growth as artists and make progress during their Art and Design journey, at our school.

- stimulate creativity and imagination in all pupils, through visual, tactile and sensory experiences
- encourage our children to explore, build on and record their own creative and imaginative ideas, building confidence and enjoyment

Curriculum
At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, we believe Art & Design is an essential part of our curriculum, inspiring creativity, imagination, and self-expression. From Reception through to Year 6, children are encouraged to explore, experiment, and develop their skills using a wide range of techniques and materials.
We use the KAPOW platform to support the delivery of our Art & Design curriculum in Years 1–6. Lessons are carefully sequenced, age-appropriate, and designed to build knowledge and skills progressively, while Early Years provision focuses on creative exploration through child-led play and continuous provision.
Early Years Foundation Stage
-
Art & Design in EYFS is child-led. Staff provide resources, and children are encouraged to create their own designs.
-
Each classroom has a dedicated creative area to inspire exploration and imagination.
-
Staff support learning by asking questions, offering suggestions where appropriate, and evaluating designs with children through verbal feedback.
Years 1 - 6
-
A carefully planned medium-term curriculum ensures progression of skills and knowledge across the school, building on prior learning and introducing new concepts step by step.
-
Art is taught discretely, with meaningful links to other subjects where appropriate. Teachers adapt lessons to meet the needs of their class, ensuring all children can access learning and are appropriately challenged.
-
Staff are supported with detailed lesson plans and videos, ensuring high-quality teaching and opportunities for children to reflect, debate, and discuss their ideas.
-
Children study a range of artists and artisans during their primary journey, using an ever-expanding art vocabulary to describe and evaluate their work.
-
A wide variety of materials and techniques are explored to help children become fluent and confident in their artistic expression.
-
Children record their learning in scrapbooks, although not all work is written or recorded in this way—some lessons focus on practical exploration and skill development.
Through Art & Design, we aim for every child at Winshill to grow in confidence, creativity, and appreciation for the arts, while developing skills they can take with them into the wider world.
Cross-Curricular
At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, Art & Design is closely connected to many other areas of learning. For example, in Mathematics, children explore concepts such as symmetry, shape, pattern, and ratio through creative work. In Geography, they learn about the origins of different artists and artworks from around the world, making cultural and historical connections.
These cross-curricular links enrich our Art & Design provision, helping children to deepen their understanding, apply knowledge in meaningful ways, and develop the skills and values they need to thrive in life.
