Computing
Subject Leader: Mrs M Dickerson
“Whether you want to uncover the secrets of the universe, or you just want to pursue a career in the 21st century, basic computer programming is an essential skill to learn.”
Vision
At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, we intend to enable all children to be determined, creative and independent learners. We intend to provide high-quality Computing education which equips our pupils with the skillset and knowledge to be responsible, confident and creative users of information and communication technology, whilst keeping themselves safe online. We aim to fully equip our children to participate in a world of rapidly changing technology, as we believe that they should be at the forefront of new technology. We enable them to use technology purposefully to explore, create, exchange, manipulate, present and retrieve digital content both safely and respectfully. Our curriculum builds on pupils’ knowledge of the wider curriculum areas and helps them learn how digital systems work and how to program. We aim for our children to aspire to embrace the developing area of Computing and use these essential skills learnt throughout their journey into KS3 and beyond.
Aims and Goals
At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, our Computing curriculum is designed to prepare children for life in a digital world. We aim to inspire confident, creative, and responsible users of technology who are ready to thrive in an ever-changing digital landscape.
Through our Computing curriculum, we aim to:
-
Encourage creativity, independence, and determination in all learners as they explore, design, and problem-solve using technology.
-
Teach children to navigate the online world safely and responsibly, understanding how to protect themselves and others while using digital platforms.
-
Develop confident and capable digital citizens, equipped with the knowledge and skills to use technology for communication, collaboration, and creativity.
-
Prepare pupils for the future, ensuring they can participate fully in a world shaped by rapid technological change.
-
Inspire a lifelong interest in Computing, helping children to recognise the importance of technology in everyday life and how it connects to future learning and careers.
Curriculum
At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, we provide a creative, inclusive, safe, and challenging Computing curriculum that reflects the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science. We predominantly follow the Teach Computing Curriculum, which ensures a structured, progressive, and engaging approach to developing children’s computing knowledge and skills.
Years 1 - Year 6
The Computing curriculum is carefully organised into six units per year, taught across each half term. Every unit is broken down into a series of sequenced lessons that build upon one another to ensure clear progression.
-
While most units can be taught in any order, programming units follow a clear sequence to build on pupils’ prior learning and understanding.
-
Each lesson includes detailed planning and resources, supported by the Teach Computing scheme, which provides teachers with unit guides, lesson plans, and medium-term overviews.
-
Children have regular opportunities to apply their learning in real-world contexts, using a range of digital tools such as iPads, laptops, and other devices.
-
Online safety is a consistent thread throughout our curriculum. It is explicitly taught in lessons, reinforced through key events such as Safer Internet Day, and supported by whole-school activities and enrichment opportunities.
-
Any concerns related to online safety are promptly addressed and reported through our safeguarding procedures, ensuring that pupils are supported to use technology safely and responsibly.
Our Computing curriculum ensures that every child develops the confidence, creativity, and critical thinking skills needed to become competent and responsible digital citizens in an ever-changing technological world.
Cross-Curricular
At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, we recognise that Computing is a vital skill for learning, communication, and creativity in today’s world. We embed technology across the curriculum, enabling children to see how digital tools can enhance and support their learning in every subject.
Pupils use technology creatively in Art, Music, and Design & Technology, producing digital artwork, animations, and musical compositions. They also apply their computing skills in other subjects — for example, researching information in Geography or presenting data in Mathematics.
Online safety and responsible digital citizenship are woven throughout all areas of learning, ensuring that our pupils know how to use technology confidently, respectfully, and safely both in and beyond school.
