"Mathematics has beauty and romance. It’s not a boring place to be, the mathematical world. It’s an extraordinary place; it’s worth spending time there."
Marcus du Sautoy - British mathematician

Vision

At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, our vision is for every child to become a confident, skilled, and resilient mathematician. We believe that high-quality teaching enables all learners to achieve excellence in mathematics, regardless of their starting point.

Through a concrete, pictorial, and abstract approach, we aim for children to develop a deep and lasting understanding of mathematical concepts. Our curriculum is designed to build fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills in equal measure, allowing pupils to apply their knowledge with confidence in a range of contexts.

We want every child to develop a genuine passion for mathematics—to approach challenges with curiosity and perseverance, and to see themselves as capable, creative thinkers who enjoy exploring the patterns and possibilities that maths offers.

Aims and Goals

At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, our aims in mathematics are to:

  • Develop confident, fluent, and resilient mathematicians who enjoy the challenge of learning.

  • Ensure all pupils gain a deep conceptual understanding of mathematical ideas through a concrete, pictorial, and abstract approach.

  • Promote a strong balance between procedural fluency and conceptual understanding, enabling pupils to calculate accurately, reason logically, and solve problems effectively.

  • Encourage children to think mathematically, make connections across concepts, and apply their learning to real-life situations.

  • Foster a positive attitude towards mathematics, where mistakes are seen as opportunities to learn and perseverance is celebrated.

  • Provide a curriculum that is inclusive and ambitious for all, supporting every learner to achieve their full potential.

  • Equip pupils with the mathematical skills and confidence they need to succeed in the next stage of their education and beyond.

 Curriculum

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

In our Nursery and Reception classes, children experience a mathematically rich environment both indoors and outdoors, where opportunities to explore number are woven throughout their play and learning. We focus on developing a strong grounding in number, giving children the essential building blocks to excel mathematically.
Children engage in frequent, varied, and practical activities to count, compare, and explore numbers to 10, recognising relationships and patterns. They use a wide range of manipulatives and mathematical language to build a secure foundation for future mastery in maths.

Mastering Number

Children in Reception and Years 1–3 take part in four NCETM Mastering Number sessions each week, designed to strengthen their understanding of number and deepen fluency with key facts.
In Reception, these sessions form the basis of whole-class maths teaching, helping pupils gain a deep understanding of numbers within 10 and explore number bonds that combine to make each number. This solid foundation supports confident progression into more complex mathematical concepts as pupils move through school.

White Rose Maths

From Year 1 to Year 6, pupils follow the White Rose Maths scheme, taking part in five discrete maths lessons per week. The scheme breaks down National Curriculum objectives into carefully sequenced small steps, ensuring pupils progress at the right pace to develop deep and secure understanding.
Lessons are engaging, inclusive, and age-appropriate, combining fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving. In Reception, the White Rose Shape, Space, and Measure units complement Mastering Number to provide full coverage of all mathematical strands.

Number Sense Timestables

Pupils in Years 3 and 4 take part in four dedicated times tables sessions each week, following the Number Sense Times Tables programme. These sessions develop rapid recall, accuracy, and confidence with multiplication facts, supporting pupils’ fluency and preparing them for the Multiplication Tables Check and beyond.

Cross-Curricular

Mathematics is a vital part of everyday life and underpins many areas of learning, including science, technology, engineering, and design technology. It is also essential for financial literacy and future employment. At Winshill Village, we ensure that maths is meaningfully interwoven across the wider curriculum, particularly within subjects such as science and DT, where pupils apply their mathematical understanding in real contexts.

Children are encouraged to use their transferable mathematical skills across a range of lessons, recognising how concepts such as measurement, data handling, and problem-solving are relevant beyond the maths classroom. By making these real-world connections, pupils gain a deeper understanding of how mathematics supports them in their everyday lives and future aspirations.
