Physical Education
Subject Leader: Mr E. Worth
"Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, but also the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity."
Vision
At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, we intend to inspire all our children to develop a lifelong love of physical activity. We recognise the vital contribution of physical education to a child’s physical, cognitive, social and emotional development as well as the role it can play in a child’s spiritual, moral and cultural development. We aim to provide a broad and balanced P.E. curriculum to build relationships and develop children’s self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of movement situations. We believe that through the variety of opportunities that PE offers, children can develop a sense of personal achievement, fair play, teamwork and an understanding of the ways in which sport can transcend social and cultural boundaries.
Aims and Goals
At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, our approach to PE is guided by our DREAMBIG values and a strong commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles for all. We want every child to:
-
Enjoy PE and develop confidence in their physical abilities.
-
Understand the importance of physical activity for their health and wellbeing.
-
Build knowledge, skills, and understanding across a wide range of sports and activities.
-
Develop essential physical skills such as balance, strength, coordination, and agility.
-
Learn important concepts including teamwork, strategy, resilience, and fair play.
Through high-quality, inclusive teaching, PE also supports children’s personal growth by fostering determination, respect, and self-belief. Our goal is for every child to leave Winshill not only with strong physical foundations but also with the motivation and confidence to lead active, healthy lives well into the future.
Curriculum
At Winshill Village Primary and Nursery School, PE is implemented through two dedicated, high-quality PE lessons each week, ensuring all children have regular opportunities to be active and develop their physical skills. We use the GetSet4PE scheme to support our planning, providing a clear and progressive structure that covers a wide range of sports, games, and physical activities. Lessons are inclusive, engaging, and designed to develop both competence and confidence in movement.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, physical development is an integral part of our curriculum. We focus on helping children develop control over their movements and become confident, capable movers through active play and structured activities.
Our EYFS PE provision is guided by the objectives set out in the Early Years Framework, which underpins our planning for children aged 3–5.
By the end of the reception year at Winshill Village Primary School, children will be able to:
- Negotiate space and obstacles safely, with consideration for themselves and others.
- Demonstrate strength, balance, and coordination during play.
- Move energetically, including running, jumping, dancing, hopping, skipping and climbing.
- Hold a pencil effectively in preparation for fluent writing – using the tripod grip in almost all cases.
- Use a range of small tools, such as scissors, paint brushes and cutlery.
- Begin to show accuracy and care when drawing.
Key Stage 1 (KS1)
In Key Stage 1, our pupils continue to build on the physical skills developed in EYFS. They develop fundamental movement skills, grow in confidence and competence, and access a wide range of opportunities to improve agility, balance, and coordination.
Pupils at Winshill Village Primary School are encouraged to take part in both competitive and cooperative physical activities in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
Our PE curriculum in KS1 ensures pupils:
- Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing, and catching.
- Develop balance, agility, and coordination, and apply these in a variety of activities.
- Participate in team games, learning and applying simple tactics for attacking and defending.
- Perform dances using simple movement patterns.
Key Stage 2 (KS2)
In Key Stage 2, pupils at Winshill Village Primary School apply and refine a broader range of physical skills. They are encouraged to link actions together, work collaboratively, and reflect on their performance to improve over time.
Through varied opportunities, children develop an understanding of how to stay active and healthy, while also enjoying competition, teamwork, and individual challenges.
By the end of KS2, pupils will:
- Use running, jumping, throwing, and catching in isolation and in combination.
- Play competitive games (e.g. football, hockey, netball, rounders, tennis), applying basic attacking and defending strategies.
- Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control, and balance through activities such as gymnastics and athletics.
- Perform dances using a range of movement patterns.
- Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges, both individually and in teams.
- Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
Swimming at KS2
As part of the KS2 PE curriculum, all pupils at Winshill Village Primary School receive swimming instruction. Our aim is for all children to:
- Swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
- Use a range of strokes effectively (e.g. front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke).
- Perform safe self-rescue in a variety of water-based situations.
Cross-Curricular
PE has strong cross-curricular links with several key subjects in the primary curriculum. In science, it supports learning about the human body, health, and nutrition, while in PSHE, it promotes teamwork, emotional wellbeing, and understanding the importance of a healthy lifestyle. PE also links with maths through activities involving counting, measuring, and spatial awareness, and with geography through orienteering and understanding environments. These connections help children apply their learning in meaningful, active contexts, reinforcing both physical development and wider curriculum knowledge.
