Year 1
Welcome from Miss Fitzgerald!
Hello and a very warm welcome to all our children, parents and carers. My name is Miss Fitzgerald, and I’m delighted to be teaching Year 1 this year, alongside our incredible teaching and learning assistants Mrs Ross-Tomlinson and Mrs Ohene.
Year 1 is a really exciting year where we make huge leaps of progress in what we are capable of achieving, transitioning from the play-based early years curriculum to the formal learning of the national curriculum. There will be plenty of hands-on learning opportunities this year too; from preparing fruit smoothies as part of the cooking and nutrition branch of design and technology, to learning how to programme and move robots in computing.
Be sure to check this page regularly for updates and follow our story on Class Dojo for celebrations of our learning journey!
Key Information
- Children have PE on Tuesday (indoor) and Thursday (outdoor). They need to come to school in their PE kit on these days. For health and safety, long hair must be tied up and children cannot wear earrings at all.
- All children must bring their reading books and diaries into school every day. These should be kept inside their plastic A4 reading folder (carried in a book bag to hang on their pegs).
- All children need a water bottle filled with water in school on a daily basis.
- All children require wellies and a full set of waterproofs to be able to join in with OPAL in all weathers.
- Parents can contact Miss Fitzgerald through the office, My Child At School (MCAS) App or through Class Dojo.

How Can You Help at Home?
- All children should read at home at least three times per week. To support best progress, we recommend a consistent daily reading habit, even if it is just one word or page a day, embedded somewhere within the daily routine (e.g. after eating, before teeth brushing or at bedtime).
- Please can all parents/carers sign children’s reading diaries whenever reading is completed at home. Dojo Points and stickers are awarded on a weekly basis for children reading at home. We also encourage older siblings or other members of the family to read with children and sign diaries.
- Children will also receive a ‘Weekly Spellings’ list of graphemes and words we have practised throughout the week in phonics. There is no in-school testing or expectation for children to have carried out further work at home, however you are welcome to use these to support further practise of phonics at home if you wish.
