Year 2 Home Learning - WB 04.01.2021 and WB 11.01.2021

Hi Year 2, I hope you are all safe and well and have had a lovely Christmas.

Things are little strange at the moment but our learning will continue and I will speak to you regularly over the next few weeks. On our class page there is a button so that you or your adults at home can contact me directly should you have any questions or if you would like to share any of your hard work with me.

Remote learning expectations

  • It is expected that Primary school children will access 3 hours of remote learning every week day whilst learning at home.

  • Work will be posted on the website weekly starting from Wednesday 6th January.

  • We will be adding links and videos to support the children’s learning so please check for updates every day.

  • There will be regular contact between school and the children through phone calls and zoom so that the children will be able to talk about their learning and we will be able to provide feedback.

  • There will be a contact button direct to the teacher to answer any questions and to send pictures of your work.

Home Learning - WB 11.01.2021 (Added to the blog on 08.01.2021)

Please remember to check here daily as videos and helpful tips will be added frequently to support the children with their learning at home.

Monday

Phonics

1.    The common words we are learning to spell and use this week are

never           next             first             lots              need             fish

2.    We will be learning a new suffix today (remember suffixes go on the end of a root word). Our new suffix will be -er. We are going to be using the -er suffix to change a verb into a noun.

Look at the words below that contain the -er suffix and talk about what they mean with an adult at home, if you are not sure you could use a dictionary or dictionary.com. What do they all have in common?

teacher                  driver                    plumber                 presenter                    farmer

3.    Now write a sentence for each of these words.

Reading

At the beginning of all of our English lessons, we are going to do some reading. I would like you to spend ten minutes reading a book at your colour book band. Look at your home -reading book to check which band you are reading. If you are still unsure, then ask a grown-up to email me and I will let them know. Follow the link to the Oxford Owl website to select a book at your band. When you reach the page, scroll down. Here you will be able to select levels (see image below) and then book bands. Select the colour band and choose a book.

Oxford page.PNG

Spend ten minutes reading. If possible, read to another member of your family. When you have finished reading, I would like you to spend a few minutes, talking about what you have read. Can you retell the key events or information in your book? Can you include details?

Here is the link for the Oxford Owl website - click here.

English

Over the next couple of weeks, we are going to be learning all about firefighters and the important job that they do. This links in beautifully with our topic for Year 1 and Year 2, The Great Fire of London. By the end of next week, you are going to have written an information page about the fire service for people at home to read.

Let’s begin by finding out what you already know. Here is a photograph. Spend a few minutes saying what you can see. Can you write down any important words about firefighters and the fire service that may be useful over the next couple of weeks.

Firefighters.PNG

Here are some key words:

equipment hose fireproof helmet rescue emergency brave

You are going to choose four key words (you may use four from above or you may choose some of your own words) to find the definition of. Use a dictionary to help you, or click here to use an online dictionary. Talk about the meanings of the words and write them down in your own words.

For example,

Fire drill - a practice of what we must do if there is a fire.

Keep your words and definitions ready for our English lessons this week.

Maths

In maths this week we will be starting our new topic on ‘Time’. Our lessons in class will be following the same structure as the lessons on the oak national academy and have come from the same scheme we are using so the activities match what the children in school will be doing. I will post the link for the lesson that corresponds with the lesson that I will be teaching in school. On the links there is a starter quiz, video, worksheet and an exit quiz for each lesson that the children should complete. The videos are very useful as they have a teacher talking through the slides to help the children to understand. I have attached some other worksheets as well to support the children with developing their understanding.

As well as these the children need to continue to practice telling the time for o’clock and half past which we covered last term.

Today you will need a piece of paper and a pencil, a clock and a dice. If you do not have these, I have attached some links for creating your own with your child at home.

Lesson 1 - knowing the number of hours in one day.

  1. Worksheets

  2. Dice net

  3. Make your own clock

Art

This half term we will be exploring the work of Claude Monet. I would like you to take some time today researching Claude Monet. Have a go at answering the questions below whilst you are conducting your research.

  • Who was Claude Monet?

  • When was he born and when did he die?

  • Where did he live?

  • Who were his parents?

  • Why was he famous?

  • What kind of artwork did he do?

  • Did you find any other interesting facts?

Also, look at a range of his art work and talk about what they look like and compare these, noting any similarities and differences.

You could create your own fact sheet about Claude Monet to share the information you have learnt with the people that you are at home with.

Story time

Today I would like you to listen to this reading of Charlie cook’s favourite book.

Tuesday

Phonics

1.    Please practice reading and then spelling this week’s common words.

never           next             first             lots              need             fish

2.    We will be using the -er suffix to change words from a verb to a noun. (Remember a verb is a doing word and a noun is a person, place or object)

I have written below some root words that have then had the suffix added. I need you to think back to the suffix rules for adding -ed (these were on last week’s blog post) and write your own set of rules for adding -er to a word when changing it from a verb to a noun. Remember to look at all of the words and write down all of the rules you will need.

run -> runner                              drive –> driver                            present -> presenter
teach -> teacher                        plumb -> plumber                        walk -> walker
jog -> jogger                              climb -> climber                         fly -> flier

3.    I have listed a few words below – some have the -er suffix and some are just words ending in ‘er’. Can you sort them into 2 columns?

river            plumber       Chester        never           shopper       presenter                    worker

Reading

Just like yesterday, we are going to begin with some reading. Here is the link for the Oxford Owl website - click here. Remember to select a book from your colour book band. If you come to a word that you are unsure of, I would like you to use your decoding strategies to help you. Today, use your phonics knowledge to help you read the words. Sound it out and blend together. Read the sentence - does it make sense? If not, go back and try again.

English

Following on from yesterday, we are going to read a story with the title, ‘Charlie the Firefighter’. Let’s begin by recapping the meaning of the words that we discussed yesterday.

Watch the video and join in with reading ‘Charlie the Firefighter’. Alternatively, click here to read through the text yourself.

Now we are going to answer some questions about this story.

Year 1, you will answer the questions on the talk cards in challenge 1. You can choose to read the questions and talk about these with a grown-up at home, or you may choose to write your answers down.

Year 2, you will answer questions in challenge 2. You will need a pencil or pen and some paper. You are going to write your answers, making sure you are using information from the text. Use the story video to help.

Challenge 1

Challenge 2

Maths

Starter – please spend 15 minutes on TT Rockstars (Remember your login is in your Home reading diary). I would like you to aim to move up at least 1 level, if you are struggling stop and look at the multiplications or division you are completing, work out the answers with an adult and then go back onto TT Rockstars to have a go.

Below are some videos to support you with telling the time for o’clock and half past.

Today you will need a piece of paper and a pencil as well as a clock.

Lesson 2 - Knowing there are 60 minutes in one hour

  1. Worksheets

  2. Extra activities

Computing and History

In computing today I would like you to use kiddle (a child safe search engine) to research Samuel Pepys. I would like you to find the answers to the following questions during you research and write them down.

  • When was Samuel Pepys alive?

  • Why was Samuel Pepys famous?

  • Which famous fire did he witness?

  • What did he do during the Great fire of London?

  • What do his diaries tell us?

  • What did he survive?

  • Are there any other interesting information you have found out?

RE

This half term we will be looking at Judaism in RE.

Feel free to watch the video of Miss Hughes, use the information attached or read through the information on the blog to support your children with this lesson.

Today we will be looking at the Torah. Look at the pictures below. The Torah is very special to Jews and they believe that it contains key teaching from God.

The Jews believe that reading and listening to the teachings in the Torah helps them to keep their two way promise with God, which is at the heart of Judaism.
Reading the teachings from within the Torah is a very important part of Jewish worship.

Watch this BBC clip about Jewish worship. Whilst you are watching it, think about these questions.

  • How is the Torah protected?

  • What do the Jewish people do to respect the Torah?

  • How is the Torah read? (Think about how it sounds, what is used to help the Rabbi read the teachings and which direction it is read in).

Hopefully you will have noticed that the Torah was kept in a special place and was covered. The Jewish people handle the Torah carefully to respect it and do not touch the pages with their fingers. They use a pointer called a Yad when reading from it. The Torah is written in Hebrew and is handwritten; it is read from right to left which is the opposite way to which we read. If it was completely opened out the Torah would be the size of a football pitch.

Have a think - what makes the Torah different to books in school?

Torah.jpg

I would like you to create your own paper scroll. I have attached some instructions but you could just use anything you have available at home. Here is a picture that shows the Hebrew word for Torah; you could write this onto your scroll.

It would be good if you could look at the rules for handling the Torah and write them down as a set of instructions.

Story time

Today I would like you to listen to this reading of Mrs Mole I’m home.

Wednesday

Phonics

1.    Please practice reading and then spelling this week’s common words.

never           next             first             lots              need             fish

Reading

Let’s begin with some reading. Here is the link for the Oxford Owl website - click here. Remember to select a book from your colour book band. If you come to a word that you are unsure of, I would like you to use your decoding strategies to help you. At the end of your reading today, record some sentences about your favourite part.

English

Yesterday, we read Charlie the Firefighter. Recap on the story by watching it again or reading back through the text. Scroll up to Tuesday to do this.

Tomorrow, we will be writing a description of Charlie, including where she works, what she does in her job and what she looks like. Today we are going to plan our writing by recording some key words and phrases. Use the following questions to help you do this. You may also come up with your own questions. Use the story to help you.

  • Where does Charlie work?

  • What job does Charlie do?

  • What does Charlie have to do in her job?

  • What makes Charlie good at her job?

  • What does Charlie look like?

Here are some key words to help you:

uniform rescue team fit strong fire engine fire station hose team brave rescue

Maths

Starter – Write all of your number bonds to 10 and 20. Try and do this systematically to help you.

e.g. 0+20=20

       1+19=20

       2+18=20

Today we will be identifying quarter past on a clock watch the video below to support you with this.

Today you will need a piece of paper and a pencil, a clock and a ruler (or something with a straight edge).

Lesson 3 - Identifying quarter past on an analogue clock

  1. Worksheets

PE

Today I would like you to complete one of Joe Wicks’ workouts. In school we will be completing the workout that he records live from the morning. You could choose to do this session live at 9 o’clock or you could complete this later in the day like we are in school. You could also choose to complete one of his other workouts.

Here is the link to the body coach YouTube channel.

Music

I would like you to listen to the following piece of music – you could copy some of the actions as you listen. After you have listened to the whole clip, I would like you to re-watch from 1min58 – 2mins37. I would like you to take note of any of the sounds that you hear and practice these on your own.

Some of the sounds you could have heard were

·       siren

·       shhh

·       tweet, tweet, tweet

·       mah, mah, mah (car beep)

Now be a sound detective and go around your house searching for sounds, these could be sounds you can make with your body or with items. For example, closing a door, shutting a lid, somebody typing on a computer, hitting 2 spoons together. Write down all of the sounds you created – if you don’t want to write words or phrases you could draw a picture to represent each sound.

I would like you to have a go at using a device at home to record these sounds.

Story time

Today I would like you listen to this reading of Handa’s surprise.

Thursday

Phonics

1.    Please practice reading and then spelling this week’s common words.

never           next             first             lots              need             fish

2.    Below I have listed the months of the year. Can you say the word and clap out the syllables? I would like you to write the letters that represent each syllable and then write the full word, for example – Jan-u-ar-y = January

January        February                March          April            May         June             July              August                   September   October     November    December

3.    Write a sentence containing each month of the year. This could be a recap of last year or you could write some silly sentences.

4.    Read your sentences out loud to someone at home. Check that they make sense and edit them if they don’t.

Reading

Let’s begin with some reading. Here is the link for the Oxford Owl website - click here. Remember to select a book from your colour book band. Spend ten minutes reading your chosen book or finishing a book you have already started. Tell somebody at home about the book you have read today. What was it about? What did you like about it? What did you dislike? Would you recommend it to a friend?

English

Let’s recap on the week so far. We have been learning about firefighters by reading a book called ‘Charlie the Firefighter’. At the end of this unit of learning, we will have written our own information page all about Firefighters. Yesterday, we did made notes to plan for our description of Charlie the firefighter. Read back through your plan.

Today, we are going to write a description of Charlie. We are going to write in full sentences by saying our sentence before we write it down. We are going to listen carefully for the sounds in our words. We will remember to use spaces between our words.

Year 1, we will begin our sentences with a capital letter and end them with a full-stop. I would like you to write five sentences about Charlie, using your planning from yesterday.

Year 2, remember to punctuate your sentences with capital letters, full-stops, question marks or exclamation marks. Can you include some expanded noun phrases in your writing? For example,

Charlie wears a yellow, fire proof jacket to protect her body.

Maths

Starter – Practice counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, forwards and backwards up to 12 times this number.

Today we will be identifying quarter past on a clock watch the video below to support you with this.

Growth – growing

Reproduction – making new life

Excretion – getting rid of waste

Nutrition – getting food

Zoom

This afternoon it will be our class zoom call at 1pm. Could you all please have one piece of work ready that you would like to share and one thing that you had for Christmas to share with the rest of the class. I look forward to seeing you all.

Story time

Today I would like you listen to this reading of The colour thief.

Friday

Phonics

1.    Please practice reading and then spelling this week’s common words.

never           next             first             lots              need             fish

2.    Complete handwriting practice with these words, writing each one five times and making sure that your letter formation is correct and are the correct size in relation to the other letters.

3.    Get your adult to read these words to you for you to practice spelling – remember to think about the root word and apply the suffix rules when adding the –er suffix.

builder         teacher        plumber       walker          runner          driver          reader

4.    Write as many other –er words as you can think of.

5.    Ask your adult to read these sentences to you so that you can write them independently.

a.    The builder and the plumber are working together to build a new house.

b.     The runner shouts to the walker so that they can get past.

c.    The teacher is a driver when they are on the way to school.

Reading

Let’s begin with some reading. Here is the link for the Oxford Owl website - click here. Remember to select a book from your colour book band. Spend ten minutes reading your chosen book or finishing a book you have already started.

English

We are going to begin by writing the alphabet in lower-case letters. Try your best to form each letter correctly. Can you write the alphabet in capital letters? Pick out three letters that you think you could improve on and practice writing them.

Take out your writing from yesterday. We are going to read through our own sentences to check they make sense. Read your sentences out loud and listen to yourself. Do you need to make any changes? If so, then do that now.

You can choose whether to add more sentences to your writing or improve the sentences you have written. Choose an idea from the list below.

  • Choose one sentence and read it through. Are there any words that you can improve upon to make your writing sound better? Write out your improved sentence.

  • Let’s check your punctuation. Have you started each sentence with a capital letter? Highlight the capital letters as you check. Does each sentence end with punctuation (full-stop, question mark, exclamation mark)? In a different colour, highlight your punctuation.

  • Checking spelling - circle some words that may not be spelled correctly, perhaps they just don’t look right. Use a dictionary or dictionary.com to check the spelling of your chosen words. Correct any that are incorrect and write three times.

Remember to take a photograph of your super work and email across so that I can post in our class gallery.

Well done Year 1 and 2!

Maths - Arithmetic

Spend some time with your clock making and reading different times using o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to.

Please spend 15 minutes on TT Rockstars (Remember your login is in your Home reading diary). I would like you to aim to move up at least 1 level, if you are struggling stop and look at the multiplications or division you are completing, work out the answers with an adult and then go back onto TT Rockstars to have a go.

I would like you to practice partitioning 2-digit numbers today. Choose a 2-digit number and think about the number of tens and ones that are in the number and represent this in a range of ways. Watch the video to support you with this.

PSHE

In PSHE this half term we will be focusing on money and finance.

This week I would like you to use the images of coins or any coins you have at home to identify the name of each coin and think about how much they are worth. You could even draw and cut out your own coins. Could you make different amounts using these?

Set up a shop at home with a range of objects and put prices on them. Somebody at home could come and buy things from your shop. Talk to them about where money comes from and how we get the money to pay for things.

I would like you to now think about and write why it is wrong to steal money.

Story time

Today I would like you listen to this reading of Juniper Jupiter.

Please remember to continue to share your work with me using the information on our class page. It is so lovely to see how hard you are all working.

Stay safe and always remember how amazing you are!

I look forward to seeing you all soon,

Miss Hughes

WB 04.01.2021 (Moved to the bottom 10.01.2021)

Phonics

We are currently focusing on using the past tense within phonics lessons and more specifically adding the -ed suffix onto verbs. I would like you to look at the words below and add the -ed suffix to them. Remember to apply all of the rules that we have been learning in class to help you.

play                        shout                     decide                    taste

cry                         fry                         look                        like

listen                     stop                       land                        pull

jump                       want                       live                         hop

trip                        skip                        worry                     cry

It would be really good if you could use some of these past tense verbs to write your own sentences.

Challenge – Can you change these sentences from present tense to past tense?

 1. Sarah jumps over the fence.

2. My sister likes her ice-cream.

3. The lion roars fiercely.

4. The wolf howls at the moon.

5. The brave man saves her life.

Suffix rules –

·       change a ‘y’ to an ‘i’ and add -ed unless there is a vowel before the ‘y’.

·       take the ‘e’ away and then add -ed.

·       if there is a short vowel sound before the last letter, double the last letter and then add then add -ed

Spelling and Handwriting

To support your spelling and handwriting I would like you to practice the words that are identified in your reading diary that you need to practice spelling and write them in your neatest handwriting. Remember to form your letters correctly. The Year 2 common exception words are also attached here for you to practice

Below are reminders of how each letter should be formed.

·       Ladder letters

·       Curly caterpillar letters

·       One-armed robot letters

·       Zig-zag monster letters

 Reading

I would like you to have a go at reading the story about The Enormous Turnip. Think about whether you have heard this story before. Was the story exactly the same? What was the same? What was different? You could also watch this version on YouTube to help you.

I would like you to read the text by yourself and have a go at answering the questions. There are three versions at varying difficulty so choose one that will challenge you.

I would also like you to choose a book from home that you enjoy reading. Could you create your own questions for someone at home to answer about the book you have chosen?
Remember to use open questions so that the answer is not just yes or no.

·       who

·       what

·       where

·       when

·       why

·       how

·       which

You could also write a book review to recommend this book to a friend. I have attached a book review template that you could use or you could create your own.

Writing

This week I would like you to think about the story of the enormous turnip, think about which characters are in the story. I would like you to think about how you could change the characters in the story like we did for Pinocchio and create your own version.

You could create your own story map to help you with your story. Make sure you add words and phrases to your story map that would be helpful in your story.
I would be really pleased if you could use some expanded noun phrases in your writing to add description. Remember an expanded noun phrase is adjective, adjective noun.

If I was to write my own version I would call it ‘The Gigantic Apple’. Click on the link to read my story.

Maths

We are going to focus on addition and subtraction this week. I would like you to remember to use pictorial representations to support you with answering the questions – if you have forgotten how to do this watch the videos I have uploaded to help you. Here are also some word problems that I would like you to have a go at.

I would also like you to continue to practice your number bonds using the sheets below.

·       Number bonds to 10

·       Number bonds to 20

·       Number bonds to 100

Also attached are some reasoning and problem-solving questions that you could have a go at to show your deeper understanding and practice the skills you have learnt.

Science

In science we were looking at materials and their properties. I would like you to watch the following video from BBC bitesize about recycling.

Have a go at researching which materials can be recycled. Maybe you could also find out how these materials are recycled and what happens to materials that are not recyclable.

I would like you to create your own information leaflet for somebody else to help them to understand why recycling is important; what can be recycled; what happens to recycled materials and what happens to materials that can not be recycled.

Art

Last term we were looking at sculpture. Within school we have used a range of techniques to manipulate clay. It would be great if you could create your own sculpture using a range of objects from home. This could be made from recycling or you could use objects such as cups, spoons, forks, cushions, shoes etc. Be as creative as you can with your sculptures.

Health and Well-being

I would like you to think about yourself this week. Draw a picture of yourself and write everything positive about yourself around the outside. Think about what you do to help others, your characteristics, things that you do in school and outside of school.
